Coupon Conspiracy

6 08 2007

Have you ever paid close attention to all the coupons in the Sunday newspaper?  Really looked at them over 12 weeks and seen what goes on sale?  See any trends?

I do….NOTHING HEALTHY IS EVER ON SALE!!!!  I could scream, I swear.  I have been doing The Grocery Game half-heartedly for the past 3 months now, and I can’t stick to “the list” because there’s so much crap on it.  3 bags of Doritos for 4 dollars.  Full fat Ranch dressing for $0.50.  Free Pillsbury cookie dough when you buy a trough of full fat cheddar cheese from Kraft.  I mean, give me a flippin’ break!  With DH leaving for training in a few days, I no longer have a need for coupons.  With the exception of Egg Beaters (bless them) and Tampons, I just can’t use the list and coupons.

OK, off my soap box.  I just got really cranky tonight when I opened up my list and was again disappointed in what was on it.  To its credit, it does show fruits and veggies that are a good buy, but the coupons are really where you feel like you are beating the game….except, when the game makes you fat.  No wonder we have weight issues in this country.  It’s the default.

Not much new and exciting here today.  I had to take the day off because I had PT tonight, and my kneecap is all taped up again.  I won’t be cleared for running until next week, so I’m a little frustrated.  The pain is all but gone, but I’m having issues with the other knee.  So until then, I’m stuck swimming and biking.  Methinks I’ll be doing LOTS of pool time this week, thanks to my travel schedule.  Tomorrow we’re doing a long lake swim, and then Wednesday we hit the beach for a mile timed swim and a 20 minute run. (Walk for me!)  I’ll probably take my bike for a spin early Thursday morning, then it’s time for PT again that evening before my trip.

Eating-wise, today hasn’t been too bad.  At 24 points a day, I’m finding that I can handle the points, assuming I count.  I should weigh myself tomorrow and see how that’s going….but I’ve basically ignored the scale during this triathlon training and am just working out according to the program.  Anyway, here’s the day:

Food Points Points Remaining (out of 24)
Coffeemate with coffee 3 21
Dannon Light n’ Fit yogurt with 1 cup blueberries & raspberries 2 19
6″ turkey on wheat with Baked Lays 9 10
Small Banana 1 9
Small apple 1 8
5 ounces grilled chicken with steamed broccoli and side salad 6 2
Quaker buttered popcorn Mini Delights 90 calorie pack 2 0

I TOTALLY agree. I don’t even bother anymore with them, completely useless except for diapers and feminine products. LOL

I’ve completely given up on coupons too! My time & energy are much more valuable than the $2 I save for the one or two good coupons I actually get & can use. Glad to hear your knee is doing better (pain wise anyway…) I was wondering what they’re having you do that has seemed to help? I’m sure our injuries aren’t identical, but if you have any strengthening exercises that have helped I’d like to try them. Email me! :D Have a good night & keep going strong!

Sorry to hear that your other knee is giving you grief. Mine are doing okay. I run today so we will see how that goes. I just started the grocery game a couple of weeks ago. Its been great so far for me since my DH rebels at times on eating super healthy. He has a poptart everyday along with little debbie brownies and chips. Luckily they don’t interest me so I don’t touch them!

I can totally relate to the coupons! I hear how much money people save by using them, but I’ve looked every Sunday for the last several weeks and there has been ONE coupon each week that I might use. ONE! Even if it is doubled, it can not be worth my time to flip through the sheets and cut/tear it out.
Why can’t there be coupons on fruits and veggies? Once in a blue moon, I might find one for canned veggies, but never for fresh or frozen. Grumble, grumble, grumble.
Glad to hear that the PT seems to be helping. Good luck with that.

Since starting WW it has become harder to use food coupons. I still like them though because I use them on things at Target for the house. Try logging on to the sites of your favorite healthy foods and sign up for their newsletters. A lot of them have coupons on their site that you can print instantly and then they send you more later via the newsletter.

Hope your knee is better soon!

AGREED. I am so sick of spending a bazillion (that’s a technical term) dollars on healthy food…but I’d rather be poor and hot than rich and fat….so the health food people win :)
