HOW MANY POINTS IS THAT SALAD?!? (6/28/07)

I am currently helping a friend through her weight loss journey. I myself have been on the Weight Watcher’s journey for 1 year and 6 months. Last year I lost 29 pounds and gained back 13 because I veered from the program. Well, I’m back to get to goal. I’ve lost 4 of the 13 so far.
I am trying to help my friend by giving her pointers that I’ve learned through Weight Watchers. And the main thing I’ve learned is that you have to plan. You need to know what it is that you are going to put in your month, and what the points value is (if you do points).
My friend went to Quizno’s today without checking the menu items, and the calories associated with their menu items. She tried to make the best choice possible from the menu before her. She ordered their Flatbread Roasted Chicken Salad with Honey Mustard. This salad is 22 points! 17 if you don’t have the dressing. Luckily she eliminated the dressing and the flatbread, so she ate mabye an 11 point salad. I think that 11 points is kind of high for one meal (especially a salad), but that’s just me. She checked with me after the fact, and was disappointed at how high the salad was only because it left her with very limited points for her dinner.
I told her not to sweat it because that is the beauty of flexies, but I could totally relate to what she felt like.
I like to plan about a week ahead because I cook for me and for my family. The best thing about WW is that it’s not a diet, but a lifestyle. And my entire family benefits from healthier choices. Not to mention it feels good to eliminate the guessing game and have a plan. I love knowing what I’m going to have to eat. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not rigid. There are room for changes because some things don’t happen the way you plan them, but for the most part planning helps keep me “in the game”.
Have a great day, and thanks for stopping by. :0)

I think the big thing to tell your friend, and I’m sure you can relate, is the fact that after awhile, you really get to know what to order at different restaurants. Eating out is part of the problem for me. Now I know what to get at the staples we go to. That way, it will become a lifetsyle…just because you lose all the weight doesn’t mean suddenly you can eat the dressing and flatbread! That’s always been my problem in the past! What a journey it is!

You hit the nail on the head. This is a lifestyle - a way of eating rather than a diet. I think that’s where we go wrong and I’ve been trying to get that through to my 9yo. Mommy is trying to lose weight by learning how to eat healthier, control portions and choosing lower fat, higher fibre options. Some also focus on the sodium content, but I tend to drink enough water that I don’t sweat that. Congrats on the loss!
