Move and Groove!

That’s the work out class at the YMCA that I tried this morning! Y’all it was TOO cute! It was a group of like 7 older ladies (most likely 50s and up) and we worked out to SHOW TUNES! Now, I loved this because I’ve grown up in choirs and attended all sorts of musicals and Broadway shows, so I was rocking out! But these ladies were just so cute. They really were grooving away to the show tunes and I just wanted to scoop each one up because I thought they were so precious! By the end of the class they all knew my name and were encouraging me to please come back next week! It was the sweetest thing!
Now I’m debating attending the Dance NRG class this evening. And I have to share a funny story with y’all. I definitely had a blonde moment earlier today. This whole time I’ve only ever seen Dance NRG printed on a handout sheet. So I never really said it out loud, just browsed over it. There was no description for the class so I began to wonder what NRG was? Hmmm…I assumed I’d figure it out once I attended. Well I was talking to one of my best friends today and told her I had plans to attend the Dance NRG class and it was like LIGHT BULB! I seriously was like, OHHHHHHHH ENERGY!!! NRG! I GET IT! hahhahaha…I cracked myself up! It’s ok…you can laugh, I laughed at myself!
Further news would be that I had weigh in yesterday. It wasn’t the greatest weigh in but I knew that going in so I wasn’t like shocked or disappointed or anything. What I am excited to share though is in class, we were discussing REACH to Become Active!
Recognize an excuse
Ease into activity at your own pace
Ask for help
Change negative thoughts
Have fun with it
Simple enough! Each one is really pretty self explanatory. But it got the class to talking about the different things that they liked to do. Some like solitary exercise such as running. Others needed a group experience like Step class, etc. Well fortunately, I do well with both! As long as I have music I can totally work out alone and then of course I am totally a people person so group classes make me happy (I also want to teach group aerobic classes so I guess that’s really right up my ally). Anywho, one of the members was talking about how she was learning to run and had joined a marathon training running group. Once my back is stronger I totally want to join one of those groups because I would love to run a 5K (although is it true that you can’t have an ipod or anything?? or is that only in the hardcore races? Because I don’t know if I could run ANYTHING without music!) But I digress, so this particular member mentioned that in her group was a man who taught people HOW to run. Not just like training for a marathon but the actual correct way to run and swing your arms and everything. This made me SO excited!! I spoke with her after class and asked for his information, she’s bringing it next week. But you see, on the treadmill, I am a toe runner. Like, I run on the balls of my feet. Which evidently is a sprint run. I’ve heard people say that you are supposed to make full contact of your foot to the floor - like heal, midfoot, toe, etc. - well, I’ve never really been able to do that. Not on a treadmill anyways. I think I have a little more success running on the actual ground. But still, I could learn SO much from a running coach. It was like God knew I needed this because I have seriously been contemplating asking someone, anyone who I see running, exactly how they place their foot and make it all work, lol. So this honestly was a God send! It’s ALSO really exciting because evidently, there is a way to swing your arms properly. I THINK I DO IT WRONG! When I run or am even on the EFX and swing my arms, I tend to get this pain in my left shoulder/neck/back area. I’ve had an MRI on it before and it showed definite muscle spasms but nothing was like out of place. So I’m wondering if I am just swinging my arms in such a wrong way that it’s causing me this pain? I mean how great would it be if that’s the actual problem and there is an actual way to FIX IT!! I just can’t wait to get this guy’s number and call him up because I think he will just be able to do wonders with me! So the meeting just made my day - well week actually.
Oh, I also bought the Weight Watchers Start Living, Start Losing - Inspirational stories that will motivate you now - book. I LOVE inspirational weight loss stories! I mean I think we all do or we wouldn’t have gravitated towards Roni’s website and this blogging community! So I am really happy to begin reading it and just have a new story and inspiration every day! I’ll be sure to let y’all know what I think!
Well, that’s all for now! I hope everyone has been having a successful week - I know I’m still on cloud 9 from Ali’s win on the Biggest Loser! haha…talk to y’all soon. Oh and I’ll be sure to let y’all know about the Dance NRG class if I am able to make it tonight!
OK well I didn’t make it to the dance class tonight because I went and had a mani/pedi at 5pm (at a place I’ve been dying to get into but they just opened up and it’s been pretty packed and they had a cancellation, lol) and it has been my experience that if I AT ALL try to wear any close toed shoes on the same day of the pedicure that they WILL get smudged. Nothing drives me more crazy than messed up toes and nails, especially immediately after I got them done! So that’s why I didn’t go tonight. Besides, I already worked out once today and truly did get a good work out in. Plus, I don’t want to overdue it and two classes in one day with my back, might not have been the best decision anyways. So yeah…but I WILL be trying it next week!! So once I do, I’ll let you guys know!!

Once again…loved your post! I bet those little old ladies just loved having you there! A bubbly little young chic to spruce things up a bit! I love older people! When we first got married we used to play cards in a Pinochle league on Mondays and Thursday nights! I finally had to quit because I was getting SO attached to those little ol’ ladies…and they kept droppin’ off…one by one! It was like losing a grandma every month!
I SO agree with your need for music when you exercise! Which reminds me…I need to work on some new playlist! Getting tired of mine right now! I went to the gym tonight and rocked out for 50 min. on the elliptical! I was dripping wet when I got done…felt great!
TTYL dear! If I don’t get time tomorrow…I’ll wish you a GREAT weekend now!

So glad you had so much fun in your class! Having fun really helps make exercise seem less like work!
My personal trainer told me that swinging your arms straight out in front of you, keeping your elbows at a 90 degree angle is how you should run. I apparently swing mine side to side which hurts my forward momentum. Not sure if that makes sense, but maybe try and notice how you are swinging your arms next time you are jogging.

Hi Kristi…I’m here and I’m all right. I have not given up my goal or my every day is a “day one” mentality. It is just going to take me a few extra weeks to start the official 365 day countdown. Sounds like you have been doing great! Keep it up! And thanks for checking on me again…I need the support.

Please let us know the correct way to run. I think I probably look weird when I run, because I am a beginner. It sounds like you are having fun working out. It is good to be excited about going to a class. I hope I get some of my NRG back so I can start running again.
Oh and the last time I got a Mani/pedi they got smudged before I even got in my car. I was so bummed.
Have a good weekend.
