Finally losin’ it

Just another Blogs.weightwatchen.com weblog

Why is this so difficult?

I know what I need to do in order to lose weight. (I should, after so many years of having it drilled into my head.) Make the right food choices and move more.

Distilled to that pure form, nothing could be simpler.  So why is it so darn difficult to follow through?

I know I need to eat fruits, veggies and whole grains. I know I need to work out. Unfortunately, it’s just not that simple when the greasy burgers and fries are calling out “pick me, pick me!”

You guessed it: I succumbed to the drive-thru last night after work. Got a 5-piece chicken nuggets and a cheeseburger deluxe (at least I remembered to ask for no mayo). Had it all gobbled up by the time I was 10 miles down the road to the Boyfriend’s house.

It was doubly disappointing because I’d been good all day. I had a sensible breakfast (egg on slice of flax-bread toast with FF cheese and salsa with 1/2 cup NSA applesauce), good lunch (veggie burger on a light muffin with avocado, tomato and onion and grilled potato “fries”) and nice, healthy dinner (grilled steak with two slices polenta, zucchini and onion).

Actually, I wasn’t quite good ALL day. Toward the end of the night at work, I got the munchies. I had a 1-Point piece of chocolate, a 1-point Peanut Butter Bliss bar and a 3-Point Chocolate-chocolate chip muffin, plus a small handful of jellybeans from someone else’s desk. Then I proceeded to cap it off with the drive-thru run at the end of the night.

The good news is, I went to the gym — both yesterday and today. Yesterday, it was 15  minutes on the elliptical trainer and 25 with weights. Today I did 15 minutes on the elliptical and 25 on the treadmill.

Even better, today I went to the gym even though I didn’t really want to go. It would have been easy for me to drive right past and go home to make some lunch instead, but I said “No. You’re going to work out.” So I did, and still had time to make lunch — and work on my newest (still on the drawing board) novel — before heading to work.

My writers’ group is having a contest: After last Saturday’s meeting, on writing a first draft in a month, our task is to write one of our own … but in two months, since we meet just once every two months. So far, I’m right on pace, just having finished Day 5’s tasks.

  1. If getting healthy was easy, everyone would be doing it! LOL Sometimes, eating gets out of hang, it just happens. The important thing is that you pick yourself up and keep on trying. Don’t plan to get back on track the next day, get back on track right after you’ve gone off in the ditch. It takes little steps sometimes, don’t get overwhelmed….you will find your groove. :)

  2. Great advice. Thanks! (I do try to keep in mind the motto “every minute is a chance to start over.” But
sometimes I still give in to the whole defeatist attitude of “I ate ______ so I might as well blow it for the
rest of the day. Hopefully, I’ll be able to change that, though.
