Just Say No to Diet Drugs!
29 04 2008It seems like almost every month something new about diet pills hits the press. Here’s an article I stumbled on this morning.
Scientists in Australia have discovered a “breakthrough” in weight loss medicine. Does this stuff freak you out as much as it does me?
“Researchers in Melbournefound that by manipulating fat cells in mice they were able to speed up the animals’ metabolisms. They found that when a particular enzyme, known as angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), was removed, mice were able to eat the same amount as other mice but burn more calories and therefore gain less weight.”
To read the whole article, go here.
When we start removing building blocks from our bodies, doesn’t it seem logical that something else will suffer? How could they ensure that “ACE” would only be removed from fat cells and not brain cells or cells from other vital organs? That’s why so many of these drugs end up being pulled off the shelf- because they end up killing people!
So basically this article is stating that we would be able to eat more and lose weight with a pill- no diet or exercise required. Genius… Stupid! Looks like a great excuse for us to be thin and unhealthy. Count me out! Anyone with me?
Despite my pessimism, does this excite anyone out there?

Really and truly if it were THAT simple, wouldn’t we all be thin and lovely? What I find scary is that there are still millions of people wasting millions of dollars on these scams!
Hard work is what gets us there!
I can’t tell you how modern medicin makes me really angry. Definately a rant I will save for another day!
I’m reluctant to take an advil…so diet drugs are not for me. Or any other manipulation for that matter. There’s only one way to make it work and that’s diet and exercise. I worked with a young lady who had gastric bypass surgery. She lost over 100lbs..BUT, refused to change her diet. Guess what! She gained back over half the weight and now has stomach problems along with being over weight! When will people learn…
I have to admit, some diet drugs have definately intrigued me in the past. I was too much of a chicken to ever take any of them, but for some reason I thought they sounded like they would work. Once I found WW I know what I am doing now is right and the diet drug commercials all just sound so horrible to me and make me angry.
While completely not interested in diet drugs, this scientific discovery seemed like it was legitimate. Although all the diet drug commercials claim, “A major medical breakthrough”, this one has actual science behind it. I tend to be contemptuous of “cheaters”, people who use medically dangerous shortcuts to lost weight instead of just losing it, but if a legitimate drug was available, this country could get a lot healthier.
