New Book Club

Some girls from church started a new book club, and we had our first get-together this morning. What a great time! I’m super pressed for time at this point in my life with med school and all, but it sure is relaxing to read a book for fun and be able to look forward to a great discussion about it. The first book we read was “Stargirl” by Jerry Spinelli (same author as “Maniac Magee” if you’ve read that Newberry Award Winner). It was excellent! The story is primarily about a teenage girl named Stargirl who is free-spirited and mysterious, and her presence at Mica High is unwelcomed as she doesn’t fit the mold of what is thought to be acceptable by her teen peers. It’s an excellent, quick read on the “young teen” level, but the themes of the story resonate with people of all ages: how to be yourself, what it means to “fit in,” and how we feel that model should be/shouldn’t be challenged. Highly recommended! Also recommended, find a book club! The books have been pre-screened so you’re guaranteed not to be wasting your time, and it’s so much fun to use free time for reading and discussing worthwhile topics. I’m looking forward to our next one; I’ll let you know what the next book is, too!

I love love love to read and StarGirl is a great book! I’m making lesson plans structured around this book for the class I am shadowing, and I think they will love it too! Keep us updated on what you read next.
