Why am I fat?? 9 Questions

Posted by Froggy on May 2nd, 2008

Here are some cool weight related questions that get you thinking…why am I/was I fat?

1. What types of food were/are you most likely to overeat?

I love carbs.  Pasta, potatoes….and anything cheesy.  A favorite combo of my old self….Ramen Noodles with shredded cheese heavily sprinkled on top.  Yum-O, heart attack in a mug.  That and ice cream, preferably peanut butter swirl….or vanilla with a big scoop of PB out of the jar!

2. What times of day did you overeat most often?

At night in front of the TV.  At night in front of the TV.  At night in front of the TV.  Seeing the pattern?

3. What feelings were you having most often when you overate?

Boredom sometimes, true hunger sometimes, but I didn’t eat slowly and give myself time to feel full before over doing it.  Sometimes I was just pissed off at someone or something.  Maybe it was ME.

4. Do you think you have a binge eating disorder?

Not really, I don’t get ravenous and eat everything in sight….but I’ve had a few times where I ate until I was REALLY uncomfortable.

5. What circumstances in your life do you believe contributed to your weight gain?

Unhappy childhood, unhappy lovelife, not liking my job or the work environment, being lazy, not liking myself much.

6. Do you ‘blame’ anyone for your weight?

Not anymore.  I was a fat child also, and so that I did and do blame on my mother.  She never tried to teach me anything about food except how to cook it.  She did take me to have my thyroid tested once when I was about 15, but it was fine…other than that nothing from her in the way of health….Today, no-one but me….I mean, my daughter doesn’t hold a bar of chocolate to my mouth and force me to eat it, nor does my husband….I am the one to blame for continued fatness.
7. What other behaviors made you overweight?

I was a pot smoker in my teens through my early 30’s.  Smoke pot, get munchies, get munchies, eat til you are sleepy, sleep and don’t burn any calories, get fatter.  That’s a BIG ONE!!!
8. Were you active or exercising while you gained weight?

No…see number 7.  I was lazy, sleeping a lot, not doing much at all.  And not working once I had my daughter which lasted until I entered business school at age 30.  Yes, unfortunately still smoking pot at that point, but would soon see the error in that and quit.  Born again non smoker.  No joke.  Please please please don’t lecture me…I know it was wrong and bad….

9. What made you finally want to change?

A.     Well, with the pot smoking it was my daughter.  I didn’t want to raise her to be a stoner too.  It wasn’t really fun.

B.     The WEIGHT - Being fat really sucks, that being said, I’ve been fat for about 41 of my 42 years.  I entered a contest after my husband challenged me yet again and asked what it was going to take for me to commit to working out since we were paying for a gym membership.  The contest came along and within days I was chosen to participate at the same gym I already belonged to….read more about it in my Who Am I? page.

I’d love to read your responses to these same questions.  I took them from a post in another blog, feel free to use them in yours.  It’s important to know why you are fat…so when you lose it, you can keep it off….

These are some really good questions. It’s good to admit to yourself what caused you to gain weight. Thats when you can start to change because you know what you need to change and how you can. Keep up the good work.

I also have kindof a personal question to ask. I have a 10 year old daughter. That loves to eat. You say you blame you mom for not teaching you how to eat good. Well I am trying to teach my daughter but she just doesn’t care. Do you think you would have listened to your mom? I hope I am not making the situation worse by trying to help. If you have any thoughts on this I would love to hear them.
