Finding ways to get active this summer with kids

We’ll see how I do next week on the scale but I really do like core.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how to work in more activity to our lives. For starters tonight we’re walking to a birthday party that DS is attending at a local museum tonight. The kids parents rented the entire museum for his party, but that is another post.

I put my bid in for a plot on a community garden space. I’m still waiting to hear if we got it for the summer. I figured it will be a great exercise activity for me and the boys plus veggies. Between the garden and the CSA membership this could turn into a food blog easily this summer.

Keep your fingers crossed we get it. Garden space seems competitive around here and I’ve had a hard time finding a garden with open space.  We have a really nice one in the neighborhood but people hang onto their plots for years and sublet them. Crazy, the dark side of community garden politics.

My other activity plan is that I hear through the parents grapevine that there is a decent (FREE)  community pool not far from the house( different neighborhood)  that offers family swim in the summer 5 to 7. It’s not used often in the evening the city uses it during the day for city day camps, according to my sources. So I figure that is another way to get some exercise in even if it isn’t hard core.

Also,  My older son is all about biking these days. I’ve been talking to the guys down at our local bike shop and I’ve almost got my nerve up to buy a bike and bike the city.  The plan is get comfortable biking myself and the baby. I’d like to pick up a tag along for the older one at least for bike paths.  There are more and bikes on the road these days and I’ve noticed that the number of bikers at my son’s daycare is rising.

What new things are you thinking of trying?

Core Baked Oatmeal Recipe

I tweaked a recipe for baked oatmeal I found at Chowhound
in order to make it core. It turned out very tasty and I suspect it will keep me filled all day.

Recipe
2 cups Irish steel cut
2 cup of unsweetened applesauce
2 cup of FF milk
2 lg eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon of ginger
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 T of lemon juice
2 16oz bag of frozen fruit of choice (used berry medley from TJ’s)

Empty frozen fruit into a 9X13 pan sprayed with pam
Mix wet and dry ingredients separately and then combine.
Pour over the frozen fruit
Bake 300 degrees covered for an hour
uncover and bake another 20 minutes

Morning

Hi:

I’m here just busy at work. Lately, I only really  get the chance to blog at work. We’ve had really nice weather so the boys and I have been outside as much as possible.  I packed up the boys this past weekend and met my best friends and her boys in the middle of the state for a slumber party. We basically swam with the boys and just hung out. She’s been my best friend for 10 years and I don’t know what I do without her. We seem to live parallel lives. We met at our first job out of college, our husbands are similar, we got married at the same time, bought houses at the same time, got pregnant at the same time,  we both have boys the same age–the older boys are nine days apart. You get the picture.  She’s been on weight watchers as well and really encouraged me this week. She’s lost a ton of weight and just looks great. I came away inspired once again.

I’m doing great with the exercise and working on the eating aspect. I don’t know why it has been so hard to get in the zone this time around. My mom is really pushing me to give core at try. She says she had a really hard time with points after awhile and Core has really helped her. South Beach has been good, except for the carb binge five days in.  But I just feel more comfortable with Weight Watchers and that Core is not really low carb.

I’m working on this week’s menu and will post it soon.

Trying out a South Beach Weight Watcher Mix

I’m going to do phase I and II and count points as well because I need to get on top of my cravings and points help with portion control. I think I need to shake it up a bit and something more disciplined might be more helpful.

Cool New-to-me-Blog Workout Mommy

I found this clip via Workout mom am bookmarking it and exploring later tonight after the boys are in bed. It looks like great ideas to workout with the kids. Gotta walk home now.

Derailed by Sesame Sticks

Sesame Sticks. IT IS AN ADDICTION.

I bought them for DS lunchbox and I ate almost an entire bag. MUST NEVER BUY THEM AGAIN. OY. Back on track today and seriously considering trying South Beach.  The Workout routine is going great.

It’s a really slow week at work which is nice after last week’s crazy schedule. I should be around more now. YAY

Feeling like I’ve got my mojo back

Getting up for the gym was just a tiny bit easier this morning and it helped that the 2-year-old didn’t get up with me. I got to the gym just as it was opening up at 6:30 a.m. and got about a 45 minute workout before heading home to have breakfast with the kiddos before the 5-year-old left for school. I successfully stayed on points last night which is such a huge victory for me. I have so struggled the past few months with staying on plan past 8 p.m. I’m packing huge snacks and lunches to get me through the day and I’ve upped the water consumption. I’m taking it one small step at a time and trying hard to get the focus back. I’m just going to do this day-by day. I do have to admit that twittering about weight loss is keeping me motivated and accountable.

I’ll take a good day.

Anyone Twitter?

So, I’ve discovered twitter. I’m wondering if twittering with others about exercise and eating healthy keep me motivated and honest? I Now to add my twitter feed to my blog. Come twitter about weight loss with me.
